design

what is instructional design:

In short, instructional design is the systematic process which combines the procedure of design, development, and delivery for instructional materials.

Instructional Design is a pre-stage for education and training development. It is reliable for people who conduct this educational design (Reiser, Dempsey, 2007). Besides, it gives the guide and instructions for teachers to develop and create new courses modules  (Merrill, Drake, Lacy, Pratt, 1996).

ADDIE Model
1. Analysis:
instructional problem is clarified. Identify the instructional goals and objectives, the learning environment and learner's existing knowledge and skills. People item, document recovery, literature review.
  • Who refers to who is the target audience. Their characteristic.
  • What refers to information related to the content that will be taught or delivered.
  • How refers to the method that will be used to determine that the content has been taught or delivered.

2. Design:
The design phase deals with learning objectives, assessment instruments, exercises, content, subject matter analysis, lesson planning and media selection.
  • Documentation of the project's instructional, visual and technical design strategy
  • storyboards
  • flowchart

3. Development:
The development phase is where the developers create and assemble the content assets that were created in the design phase. Programmers work to develop and/or integrate technologies. Testers perform debugging procedures. The project is reviewed and revised according to any feedback given.

4. Implementation:
the implementation part, it is mainly about delivery.

5. Evaluation:
The evaluation consists of two parts: formative and summative.

Formative occur during the delivery of the instructional practice and is utilized to identify revisions that are needed (Branch & Merril, 2012). The different stages of formative includes expert review, one-to-one evaluation, small group evaluation, and field test.

The summative occurs at the end of the instructional process. Its purpose is to determine the effectiveness of the instruction (Branch & Merril, 2012) and whether to continue to use the instructional product.

Dick and Carey Instructional Model
This model is another instructional model. it is a little different from ADDIE model. There are ten boxes in the model, 9 boxes of steps, and 1 box is revising, which is a very important process in the whole. and as I metioned in the Implementation part, in Dick and Carey Instructional Model, there are no implementation step, it is hidden, it usually goes before "develop & conduct formative Evaluatioin".

Reflection
In design part, we have learned a lot of skills which helps me understand the design process. we have learned ADDIE model, Dick and Carey model, and some else model. For beginners, both ADDIE model and Dick and Carey Model are good for them, because these two models give detail directions for people to follow. Our design process is base on these models, but the most important step to me is "revising".
Revising is always come with each step, because we are always improving our project, we are always looking for something better for the project and our target audiences.

In the ETEC 544 class, we did a group project which is about how to use iMoive to create a video by using ADDIE Model. In this class our group revised a lot, because it was our first project, and all of our group members are new to this program, so we have a hard and happy time. To me I have learned that the result from the target audiences are not the same as I expected, so as a designer, we have to do the research and analysis for our project instead of guessing. And in the deliver part, we did a face to face in class instruction. at this point, we have met a lot of problems, we found that we can still do a lot of improvement of our design and instruction. in this class I have learned that revising is very helpful and important.

In the ETEC 644 class, we did the individual project, mine is about how to bake a cake. Comparing with ETEC 544 class using the ADDIE model, this one we use Dick and Carey model to design the project. I have learned a lot from this class, for example ABC'RUS, follow the direction of the theory could help me do the website better. and also we did a lot revising job of our own project, revising of objectives, flowchat, storyboard, survey, and interview questions. revising is very helpful for each step.
