what is action research:

Action research is a social research method which allows teachers, managers and others to generate teaching and learning information through a systematic and rigorous procedure (Mills, 2011). What’s more, teachers could use this action research method to give an examination themselves. This systematic research method tests teachers if they combines theories and practices together (Johnson, 2008).

Two broad types of

Education Research Process:

(1) identifying a research problem and developing a research question,
The first step of research is important. Developing a research question is a big part of the whole process, because everything we will do later is focus on the research question we have.

(2) selecting a research method
Quantitative research, qualitative research, and mix research are the three different kinds of research methods. Normally, we use test, questionnaire, checklist as quantitative data, and interview, observation are used to collect qualitative data.

(3) conducting data analysis
Quantitative research method are used for getting numerical data and utilize deductive analysis to get result, such as standard deviation, mean, media.
Qualitative research method are used for getting narrative data and utilize the inductive analysis method to get result, such as case study.

(4) reporting findings, interpretations, and making conclusion
After analysis the data, we will have a conclusion and reporting the findings we have.

research methods:
  • Quantitative research
Quantitive research method demands a series of data and statistics to deduct if the outcome is appropriate. This research method combines non-experimental and experimental designs for researchers.
  • Qualitative research
Qualitative research method demands a series of narrative date to question through an induction process.
  • Mix method research
Use both of quantitative research and qualitative research. It is very common to use both of these two       methods in projects.

what did I learn?
543
I took the ETEC 543 class online, there was a lot of things I have learned.
We first talked about the two types of research questions, which is qualitative research questions and quantitative research questions. And we learned the literature review data collection, data analysis, and finally we did a research project.
When we do the research questions, I and my group members narraw down our topic and research questions several times to make it clear. This step was so important, because this is the first step of our project, we have to make it perfect and do-able.
And then we learned the quantitative and qualitative research methods, this step is how we were going to use and collect data. Literature reviews, are the supporting part of our project. We have to read some articles and journals related to our research topic.

643
The ETEC 643 class is very intereting to me, in this class I have done my own research of "
Does computer games or video games effect university/college students’ GPA?" This is a really intereting topic for people who likes to play games, such as me. I tried to guess the result before I did the research, but later on, the result is not that similar as I thought. I have learned thatwe can not do the research only by what we are expected, it is quite different.
In this class, I used one of CSUSB accounting class as my sample. The students helped me with my survey, I was so excited. Comparing with 543 class, ETEC 643 focus more on the data analysis. After I have collected all the data from those students, I did a lot of data analysis by using Microsoft Excel. there are many kinds of methed to analysis the data, such as t-test, chi-square, ANOVA, ANCOVA. I used t-test to do my research, I separate two groups of A and B to see the differences between them.

Step-by-Step Process of Action Research:

1. Planning Stage:
  • identifying and limiting the topic
  • gathering information
  • reviewing related literature
  • developing a research plan
2. Acting Stage:
  • collecting data
  • analyzing data
3. Developing Stage:
  • developing an action plan
4. Reflcting Stage:
  • sharing and communicating results
  • reflecting on the process
